Job Description

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. Located at Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire, Diamond enables world-leading research across a wide range of scientific disciplines and industrial applications.

Diamond’s accelerators contain over 1200 magnet power supplies of various types including DC, cycling and pulsed systems. High stability, reproducibility and reliability are essential for these systems which are critical to the operation of the facility. Diamond is now seeking a number of staff to work in the Power Supply Group at various possible grades. 

Head of Power Supplies Group (Ref. DIA0889-a/NH)
As Head of the Power Supply Group you will report to the Technical Director and have overall responsibility for the operation, maintenance and future development of Diamond’s magnet power supplies. You will be required to provide technical direction to the development of new power supplies.
You will have sound academic knowledge backed by extensive professional experience of a range of power supply technologies and their control interfaces, including power supply design, reliability issues, fault-finding, EMC issues etc. You will be fully conversant with safe electrical working practices, have line management experience, as well as experience of project and contract management. You will hold an electrical/electronics engineering degree.

Senior Power Supply Engineer (Ref. DIA0889-b/NH)
As a Senior Power Supply Engineer you will play a key role in the Power Supply Group, leading power supply design and development projects that are required to meet the evolving requirements of the accelerators. You will also coordinate planning and maintenance activities and analyse fault statistics to identify power supply enhancements that will improve reliability.
You will have design experience of switch mode power supplies rated in the 1-10 kW range or higher, including modelling using PSPICE or equivalent simulation programmes. You will have experience of EMC testing of such power supplies and safety procedures for measurement and fault finding on them. You will hold an electrical/electronics engineering degree.

As a Power Supply Engineer, you will contribute to the work of the Power Supply Group, supporting power supply design and development projects that are required to meet the evolving requirements of the accelerators. You will have experience of switch mode power supply design and development and of writing procedures for measurement and fault finding on such power supplies, taking safety considerations into account. You will hold an electrical/electronics engineering degree.

As a Senior Power Supply Technician, you will contribute to the work of the Power Supply Group, including planned maintenance activities and the installation and commissioning of new power supplies that are required to meet the evolving requirements of the accelerators. 
You will have experience of measurement and fault finding and/or repairing to component level switch mode power supplies, working to written procedures. You will be accustomed to replacing surface mount components on a circuit board. You will hold an electrical/electronics engineering HNC/HND or equivalent.

You will have experience of assembling surface mount circuit boards and prototype wiring. You will hold an electrical/electronics engineering HNC/HND or equivalent.
