Job Description

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. Located at Harwell Science & Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire, we enable world-leading research across a wide range of scientific disciplines and industrial applications.

  • Design and development of electronic module and sub-systems for accelerator/beamline technical subsystems.
  • Provide technical expertise on the Timing Systems including development,  operational support and analysis of installed  systems
  • Commission and diagnose faults in installed electronic systems.
  • Provide operational support and analysis of installed systems
  • Interface with internal customers, including Engineers and Scientists, at all stages of the development life cycle to, for example, develop requirements, track project progress, and verify operations.
  • Comply with and contribute to the processes and associated with software and electronic design and development,
  • Report on progress in all areas on a periodic basis.
  • Support of contractors and suppliers of turnkey systems
  • Specification and procurement of subsystems.
  • Maintain and develop technical expertise in electronics development
  • Maintain a current knowledge of other, comparable, beamline and accelerator projects.
     

Qualification & Experience - Essential

  • Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written.
  • Ability to solve technical problems, evaluating alternative courses of action and innovating where necessary.
  • Demonstrate self-motivation and a willingness to take responsibility.
  • Demonstrate ability to work as part of a team.
  • Demonstrate ability to work effectively alone and without direct supervision
  • Relevant experience in the electronic design.
  • Knowledge and experienced of digital design.
  • Knowledge and experience of analogue circuit design.
  • Knowledge and experience of VHDL design.
  • Experience of schematic capture, PCB design and manufacturer of PCBs.
  • Honours degree in physics, Elec. Eng. or Equivalent other degree + relevant experience
  • Be willing to work overtime at unsociable hours as required.
  • Be willing to travel in the UK and abroad, including occasional periods away from home.
  • Be prepared to undertake further training.

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

  • Demonstrate an understanding of staff supervision.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of project planning and management
  • Knowledge and experience in programming in C.
  • Knowledge of networking standards.
  • Knowledge of VME/PCI/PCIe/Ethernet/USB bus standards.
  • Knowledge of fast digital signal transmission technique.
