Job Description

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. Located at Harwell Science & Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire, we enable world-leading research across a wide range of scientific disciplines and industrial applications.

The main purpose of the Assistant Financial Accountant role is to support the achievement of finance department objectives and to accurately report financial information in a timely manner to ensure internal and external deadlines are met.

  • Be responsible, in coordination with the Capital Projects Accountant (CPA) and the Senior Accounts Assistant, for the preparation of the monthly Management Accounts in an accurate and timely fashion;
  • Responsible for preparing financial reports for BIS and the Large Facilities Steering Group;
  • Maintain and control the Fixed Assets Register;
  • Contribute towards the completion of the annual budget exercise and quarterly re-forecasting exercises;
  • Support the production of the company annual Statutory Accounts in preparation for year end audit including liaising with the auditors and provision of data as they request it;
  • To provide cross cover for the tasks normally performed by the Senior Accounts Assistant;
  • Be familiar with the ePcost system and be able to provide cross cover for the Capital Projects Accountant;
  • Verification of payment runs;
  • Participate in on-going system and reporting developments within the Finance function and across the company as appropriate;
  • Any additional accounting duties as deemed necessary;

Qualification & Experience - Essential

  • Part Qualified Accountant (CIMA/ACCA) at least level 2 complete/near completion. Actively Studying
  • Ability to produce the month end accounts pack and provide error free reporting;
  • Knowledge of accounting rules and how to apply them to both statutory and management accounts;
  • Attention to detail, able to review documents for errors and ability to correct them;
  • Able to prioritise work and manage various  demands, from various sources, and time pressures;
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently as required;
  • Good numeracy skills, and good communication skills (written and verbal);
  • Knowledge of management accounting;
  • Taken the responsibility for the initial preparation of management accounts;
  • Understanding and ability to prepare balance sheet reconciliations;
  • Basic foundation of work within a finance department several years experience, so that basic accounting such as accruals/prepayments etc are easily understood;
  • Excel to pivot table;

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

  • Ability to adapt within a changing environment;
  • Knowledge of preparing and submitting VAT and Intrastat returns;
  • Knowledge of  fixed asset and depreciation reporting;
  • Experience in project and major asset accounting;
  • Involvement in production of statutory accounts;
  • Understanding of the requirement and involvement in an annual budgeting;
  • Excel to macro level;
  • Ability to effectively communicate a financial perspective to highly qualified (but non financial) members of staff;
