Job Description

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility, which enables world-leading research across a wide range of scientific disciplines and industrial applications.
Following the successful completion of Phases One and Two of 22 new Research Laboratories within the facility, we are now progressing with Phase Three construction i.e. a further 10 Research Laboratories. We are thus seeking a diligent and enthusiastic individual to fill the role of Construction Manager’s Assistant to assist in managing the completion of the Phase Three Research Laboratories.

Key duties

  • Contribute to the project management construction of heavily serviced Beamlines to NEC3 Engineering Construction Contract requirements; manage own projects where required.
  • Deputise for the BIM as and when necessary
  • Provide technical construction analysis and feedback during design development stage for the variants in designs ensuring that designs are cost effective, buildable and maintainable.
  • Where appropriate, lead and chair site meetings with the Contractor and Project Team to deliver Beamlines within budget and programme.
  • Resolve site conflicts to minimise programme delays and cost escalations.
  • Contribute to the evaluation contractor payment schedules in accordance with the Contract ‘Activity Schedule’.
  • Participate in the assessment and evaluation of ‘Compensation Events’ under the terms and conditions of the Contract.
  • Contribute to the development and enhancements of relevant site procedures to effectively project manage the construction of Beamlines.
  • Contribute to the management and oversee the review of drawings, technical, design, sample and quality submissions by the various contractors.
  • Work closely with the Principal Contractor to ensure timely site access, resolution of site problems and compliance with safe working practices.
  • Keep up to date with current safety regulations applying requirements to future projects.
  • Actively communicate and liaise with Diamond technical & scientific staff as necessary.
  • Maintain and manage project files containing all relevant project documentation.
  • The position will be assisted by various DLS and Contract staff during the course of the project. These shall include a project planner, safety adviser, electrical/mechanical technical assistance and scientific assistance.

Additional Responsibilities at the Senior level

  • Manage and oversee the review of drawings, technical, design, sample and quality submissions by the various contractors.
  • Manage the development and enhancements of relevant site procedures to effectively project manage the construction of Beamlines.
  • Assess and evaluate ‘Compensation events’ under the terms and conditions of the contract.
  • Lead and chair site meetings with the Contractor and Project Team to deliver Beamlines within budget and programme.
  • Project manage the construction of heavily serviced Beamlines to NEC3 Engineering Construction Contract requirements.

Qualification & Experience - Essential

  • Ability to provide ideas and creative solutions to installation problems
  • Ability to manage time, cost and quality
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to motivate and manage contract staff.
  • Understanding of mechanical/electrical design
  • Understanding of Heating, Ventilation/Air conditioning and electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of  the CDM regulations
  • Working knowledge of engineering drawings standards.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD

Additional Qualifications and Experience at the Senior level

  • Commercial awareness within a mechanical/ electrical construction environment
  • Experience of running cost control spreadsheets and analysing variation costs and claims.
  • Background in the use of computers
  • Experience in using Microsoft Office and Project

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

  • Commercial awareness within a mechanical/electrical construction environment
  • Experience of running cost control spreadsheets and analysing variation costs and claims.
  • Experience in working with NEC3 form of contract is highly desirable
  • Familiar with Building Design Regulations
  • Understanding of procedures for the manufacture, assembly, testing and commissioning of systems
  • Experience of working within a QA system
  • Background in the use of computers
  • Experience in using Microsoft Office and Project
  • Envisaged that appointee will possess a HNC or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
