Job Description

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. Located at Harwell Science & Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire, we enable world-leading research across a wide range of scientific disciplines and industrial applications.

  • To take the lead in providing technical support expertise and developing technical support systems and standards for the Diamond Networking Infrastructure
  • To advise, implement and support Network monitoring services
  • To advise and support users on networking policy and procedure
  • To provide technical advice, trouble shoot, problem diagnosis and fix reported user issues for the Science Network including Beamlines, backbone and dedicated computer rooms.
  • Interface, raise and address Networking issues with the RAL site IT department ‘CICT’ who deliver Networking services.
  • Work with other Diamond IT teams e.g. Linux to resolve networking issues and provide Networking expertise and technical advice.
  • Work with Senior Network Administrator to implement and support agreed/published networking standards.
  • To install, manage, and upgrade switches (software and hardware), routers and fibre infrastructures including: - 1.) Backbone routers and edge switches and 2.) Beamline and fibre infrastructure patching
  • Management & project management of external providers and suppliers
  • To assist the manager in annual Networking budget planning cycle
  • To plan and coordinate project work relating to technical/Networking issue(s) (typical IT projects) for up to a year
  • To maintain, update and publish accurate Technical Network documentation on a regular basis.
  • To publish monthly Network statistics
  • As directed, any other Ad-hoc Networking and systems related requirements.

Qualification & Experience - Essential

  • Proactive approach, Team player, good inter personal communicate effectively at all levels (orally and written)
  • OSPF and resilient network design
  • Networking experience or equivalent e.g CCNA
  • Helpdesk and/or IT support management Skills

Ability to carry out the following:-

  • Switch and Router support and installation
  • DNS/DHCP/NAT management and understanding
  • Cabling Fibre & copper
  • Network monitoring

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

  • MS o/s and applications
  • Linux o/s and applications
  • Avaya/Extreme switches and routers
  • Campus Network support
  • Helpdesk role
  • Supplier management
  • Microsoft Certified Engineer MCSE and/or Red Hat Certified Engineer RHCE
  • Degree

Further Information

  • Be willing to work overtime at unsociable hours as required.
  • Be willing to travel in the UK and abroad, including occasional periods away from home.
  • Be prepared to undertake further training.
