Job Description

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility, located at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.

We are looking for an individual who will take on the editorial content management and development of our portfolio of external and internal web sites, digital communication and social media platforms. As website content manager, the post holder will have responsibility for the upcoming for migration for our intranet from consultation, editorial copywriting to implementation in close collaboration with the Communications Software and Digital Systems Engineer.

With strong copywriting skills, the individual will deliver and facilitate content for online platforms from across divisions to ensure new up-to-date content is posted. This is an exciting time to join the team as there is plenty of scope to shape the new platforms being developed.

AIM: Responsible for the proactive editorial content management and development of external and internal web sites, online communication and social media platforms.

  • Manage and develop Diamond’s web sites in line with corporate vision and strategy; in particular, deliver the web migrations from consultation, editorial copywriting to implementation in close collaboration with the Communications Software and Digital Systems Engineer;
  • Ensure a proactive framework is in place so that Diamond’s websites are up-to-date and meet brand, key messages, strategic and communication requirements;
  • Deliver high quality content and ensure the quality of the design of external web site is maintained, and meet needs of various stakeholders and audiences;
  • Copywriting for online platforms and to source information across divisions to generate and /or facilitate new up-to-date content;
  • Work in partnership with Communications Software and Digital Systems Engineer to ensure that online tools and assets fully meet the needs of the organisation;
  • Advise colleagues across Diamond on all aspects of web usability and online communications;
  • Coordinate content providers and managers to be proactive and fully trained to deliver new content;
  • Coordinate Diamond’s podcasts, twitter feed and other online media presence in collaboration with communications team;
  • Put into place information architecture to ensure search-engine optimisation (SEO);
  • Monitor relevant blogs, wikis and social media, and develop appropriate strategies to ensure Diamond’s brand and reputation are protected and enhanced online;
  • Develop new content in graphical format to facilitate poster production, illustrations and ensure that content is captured and optimised for online display;
  • Ensure that all digital assets (pictures, sound file etc) are captured and that appropriate mechanisms are in place to display them on websites both internally and externally;
  • Contribute to other communications activities including copywriting, grant applications, educational projects and corporate events as required.

Qualification & Experience - Essential

  • BA (Hons) or equivalent degree level;
  • Sound Experience and knowledge of web technologies;
  • Extensive experience of content management system  and system administration;
  • Experience of managing web projects;
  • Strong web management skills;
  • Flair for design and navigation;
  • Excellent copywriting skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to deal with technical information and make it accessible to a wide range of audiences;
  • Self motivated and able to prioritise;
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team;
  • Ability to organise and structure information;
  • Ability to translate technical information into accessible information;
  • A creative and tactical approach to information architecture;
  • Ability to relate to a wider range of people, cultures and backgrounds;
  • Able to bring people onboard with new ideas.

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

  • Experience of working in complex organisation;
  • Strong interest in science and its communication;
  • Experience in working in a scientific organisation;
  • Knowledge of other languages, eg French, German etc.
