Job Description

Diamond Light Source, one of the UK’s leading scientific facilities, carries out world class research using synchrotron light from a half kilometre circumference electron storage ring.

Key Duties:

  • Design and develop Microsoft Windows based computer systems for use in specialized systems on Diamond beamlines, with an emphasis on high performance detectors and other science specific requirements.
  • Design and develop the Science network infrastructure, with an emphasis on supporting high performance detectors, storage and clusters.
  • Establish and document standards, procedures and configurations to be used in provisioning and supporting Microsoft based computer systems and the Diamond Science Network.
  • Provide second level operational support and absence cover for the Network Support Administrator post in Business and Infrastructure IT group.
  • Systems Administration in compliance with Diamond policies on Computer Systems.
  • Commission and diagnose faults on installed Science computer systems and networks.
  • Provide operational support and analysis of installed Science computer systems.
  • Preparation of tenders and service level agreements for supply of services, and computer and network hardware.
  • Interface with internal customers, including Engineers and Scientists, at all stages of the development life cycle to, for example, developing requirements, track project progress, and verify operation of Science computer systems with an emphasis on high performance computers and networks.
  • Contribute to the processes and associated software development and data management to support the design/operation of Science computer systems throughout Diamond.
  • Report on progress in all areas on a periodic basis
  • Liaise with, and supervise, contractors and suppliers of turnkey Science computer systems.
  • Provide technical expertise in high performance networks and Microsoft Windows based computer Systems and skills in system management of Computer Systems
  • Project planning and coordination of projects relating to Computer Systems and Networks for beamlines and/or the accelerators.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of the Computer Systems and Networks on other, comparable, high performance computing and supercomputing systems, including those used on synchrotron beamline and accelerator projects.
  • Communicate details of Computer Systems and Networks developments within Diamond and to other projects.
  • Line manage, mentor and train more junior system administrators as required.

Qualification & Experience - Essential

  • Experience of modern Computer systems management techniques, design and implementation
  • Experience of administering Windows operating systems with complex provisioning requirements
  • Experience in the design and implementation of modern computer networks and the attached systems and services
  • Knowledge of networking protocols such as OSPF, ECMP, BGP, DCB, DHCP/NAT
  • Experience of network and systems security.
  • Experience of high performance computing and networking technologies.
  • Experience of remote administration of complex networking architectures.
  • Project management experience
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of staff supervision. 
  • Ability to solve technical problems, evaluating alternative courses of action and innovating where necessary.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of project planning and management
  • Demonstrate self-motivation and a willingness to take responsibility.
  • Demonstrate ability to work as part of a team.
  • Demonstrate ability to work effectively alone and without direct supervision
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in the Computer system administration of Windows systems in a mixed Windows/Linux environment

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

 

  • Support of Windows systems in a hardware control environment.
  • Experience of system administration in a demanding scientific environment.
  • Previous line and team management experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in the Network administration of complex networks.
  • Completion of a recognised Windows Systems Administration certification (MCSE – Microsoft Certified Systems Expert, MCSM - Microsoft Certified Systems Master or similar).

Further Information

  • Be willing to work overtime at unsociable hours as required.
  • Be willing to travel in the UK and abroad, including occasional periods away from home.
  • Be prepared to undertake further training.
