The transfer of cryogenically cooled crystals from liquid nitrogen into the vacuum endstation is done manually with a I23 dedicated Cryogenic Transfer System (CTS).
The CTS developed at Diamond Light Source comprises of two sub-assemblies, the Sample Station and the Shuttle. The Sample Station consists of a liquid nitrogen bath for temporary storage of protein crystals and has specific features to ensure safety and allow a user-friendly experience. The CTS is controlled by a user-friendly touchscreen interface.
Up to 4 samples can be stored in a block, and 5 blocks can be loaded in the endstation vessel.
Users coming on site will be trained to use to CTS and can familiarise themself by reading the paper:
