The beamline I23 has its own custom-made multi-axis goniometer compatible with in vacuum environment. In addition, the multi-axis goniometer is also used to keep the sample at cryo-temperatures via a thermal link (It is effectively replacing a LN2 cryojet found on standard beamlines).
Typical S-SAD experiments on I23 consist of collecting multiple low dose sweeps of data offset by the kappa and phi goniometer axis. The advantage of this protocol is to reduce systematic errors due to the instruments and measure more accurate anomalous signal.
Another use of the multi-axis goniometer is to collect datasets with high completness from low symmerty space groups. This is especially beneficial for crystals that are limited in diffraction by the dectector rectangular geometry.
