We would like to invite you to the next instalment of our monthly webinar series, a Live Family Webinar ‘PETase the plastic-eating enzyme!' on Wednesday 15th September at 16:00pm. Everyone is welcome to tune in as this webinar is specifically aimed at a general audience and no previous knowledge is required. As always you will get the opportunity to ask our experts any questions you might have. You can catch up with our previous webinars on our website here.

**Plastic pollution is one of the world’s most pressing environmental issues. In 2016, Japanese researchers discovered a bacterium at a recycling facility in Osaka that actually breaks down polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic – a major breakthrough in the fight against plastic pollution! This week we will explore the work being carried out by the Centre for Enzyme Innovation (CEI), University of Portsmouth, to increase the activity of PETase, the enzyme secreted from the plastic-degrading bacterium I. sakiensis. This research is vital if enzymatic recycling of PET plastic is to become commercially feasible and help us tackle the problem of plastic recycling. Experiments at Diamond using x-rays to study the structure of PETase have been crucial in this important work. Tune in on Wednesday to learn more!**

Amy and David from our Public Engagement team will be joined by Dr Raj Gill, Senior Research Associate at The Centre for Enzyme Innovation. Raj will take us through the work so far on the PETase enzyme and highlight how Diamond Light Source has been crucial in developing this plastic-eating enzyme! Raj will then be joined by his colleagues Harry Austin and Rosie Graham for a Q&A where you can ask any questions you have about enzymes in general or PETase in particular. As always Amy and David will be on hand to answer any questions about Diamond in general.

Tune in on Wednesday 15th September via Zoom (please note: questions can be submitted via the ‘Q & A’ function and attendees will be not be visible during the webinar). To receive the joining link please register for the webinar via the link below. Once registered you will receive an email with the joining instructions. On Wednesday all you have to do is click on the link in the email and you will be taken straight to the webinar.
