Diamond is delighted to announce it is to run the first online edition of the Synchrotron Radiation School, taking place on Tuesday 5th, Wednesday 6th, Thursday 7th, Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th October 2021.

The Synchrotron Radiation (SR) School aims to provide postgraduate students and post-doctoral researchers, who have limited experience, with a broad-based introduction to many of the different types of experiments conducted using SR techniques.

The Diamond SR School It is largely aimed at physical scientists, but life scientists are welcome to apply. The school gives the attendees the opportunity to obtain hands-on practical experience of performing an experiment on several of the Diamond Beamlines.

The format of the school will include: three days of lectures, tutorials and poster sessions, plus two days dedicated to remote experiments on a range of Diamond Beamlines (each attendee will be able to participate in at least two different experiments).

The school will be held entirely online (via Zoom).

Agenda

Please download here the provisional agenda for the event.

Topics covered in the course lectures

  • X-ray Scattering
  • Symmetry and Crystallolgraphy
  • Diamond Light Source Synchrotron
  • X-ray optics and detectors
  • An introduction to the data analysis program DAWN

And the synchrotron use of:

  • Infrared Microspectroscopy
  • Powder Diffraction
  • Resonant and Magnetic Scattering
  • Small Angle Scattering
  • Surface Diffraction
  • X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy
  • X-ray Imaging
  • X-ray Photoelectron Spectrocopy

Participating Beamlines

The heart of the SR School is the opportunity to attend hands on experiments on a number of Diamond Light Source Beamlines. Successful applicants will have a chance to measure real samples remotely and see how data analysis is done. Each participant will attend at least two practical sessions. The Beamlines participating in the course are outline below (click on each beamline for further details).

ePSIC I14 I19
I10 I15 I20-Scanning
I12 I16 B22
I13 B18 I22

Successful applicants will be invited to indicate up to five beamlines in order of preference and the organisers will endeavour to allocate practical sessions according to choices made. Please note that being allocated to one of the preferred Beamlines is not guaranteed.

How to apply

This course is always very popular and highly oversubscribed, therefore all applicants are required to complete the application form including a reference letter from their supervisor. The strength of the application and the statement from the applicant's referee are crucial to Diamond in the selection process.

Crucial to the selection will also be the commitment to attend SR School 2021 in its entirety.

Finally, priority will be given to applicants in the earliest stage of their research career, and to those who have definite plans to use Diamond Light Source for their future experiments.

To apply, please complete the following application form by 10:00am (BST) on Monday 26th July 2021.

Successful applicants will be asked to contribute with a registration fee of £50 to attend the event.
