Hannah studied medical biochemistry at the University of Birmingham (2013-2016). While there she undertook a summer project that sparked her love of crystallography and protein structures.

After graduating she started a MIBTP funded PhD within the Lovering Lab at the University of Birmingham (2016-2021) looking at a range of proteins within predatory bacteria B. bacteriovorus. There she developed her cloning and protein handling skills. This enabled her to solve several chemotaxis domain structures and a partial structure of a novel DNA binding protein, via x-ray crystallography, gaining experience with both heavy atoms and molecular replacement. From this structural information, and in tandem with ICT, she was able to determine the ligand specificity of the dCache domain family of chemotaxis protein she was studying.

From there Hannah got a PDRA position at the University of Oxford (2021-2024) within the Higgins lab looking at Plasmodia, with a focus on the PTramp-CSS-Ripr Invasion complex in P. vivax and P. knowlesi. Here she developed skills in both mammalian and insect cell culture, as well as a range of biophysical techniques including SPR and MST.

Within her role as a PDRA on I04 at Diamond Light Source (2024), she will be combining her previous experience of DNA binding protein handling with mammalian cell culture to study chromatin remodelers, with particular emphasis on CHD5. She will be using her previous crystallography experience to study individual domains, while also learning cryo-EM with the aim of solving the full-length protein in complex with nucleosomes to determine this protein’s role within transcription regulation.
