MINERVA is a chamber used for studying Microstructure and INterface Evolution in Realtime under VAcuum. It is also sometimes referred to as the CLASP chamber, from the original grant that funded its construction, the Challenge Led Applied Systems Programme.
MINERVA was jointly developed by I07 and the University of Oxford's Advanced Functional Materials and Devices (AFMD) Group under Moritz Riede. The chamber is available for use by external user groups. Please contact the beamline team or Diamond's User Office for further information.
The chamber features three independent evaporation sources, each with a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) to monitor growth rates. The sample manipulator contains a heater, and there is also a carousel for storing multiple substrates and a transfer arm, to avoid having to vent to change sample. The chamber is fully operational in an offline lab to allow trial depositions prior to beamtime.
Once on the beamline, there is an internal set of slits and beamstop to reduce scatter from the beryllium entrance and exit windows. The sample manipulator is attached to a Micos hexapod to enable alignment to the X-ray beam. The chamber is fully integrated into the beamline control and acquisition system.
The chamber is used with the beamline's Pilatus 2M detector, primarily for GIWAXS or GISAXS measurements, with sample detector distances of 0.4 to 3.0 metres possible.
Minimum pressure | 4 x 10-8 mbar |
Detector | Pilatus 2M |
Detector distance | 0.4 – 3.0 m |
