The maximum scattering intensity is achieved by selecting the optimal thickness of the sample. The scattering intensity increases linearly as a function of the sample thickness but the absorption increases exponentially. The scattering intensity can be formulated as:
d and µ are the thickness of the sample and the linear absorption coefficient respectively.

Figure 2 shows, as an example, the optimal thickness of the sample (water in this case) as a function of the energy. The data from the figure is also valid for biological molecules in dilute solution.
