Overview

Instruct-ERIC workshop on imaging cells using correlative soft X-ray tomography at cryogenic temperatures

Soft X-ray tomography (SXT) is fast becoming an established and necessary imaging technology for the life sciences catering for the capture of high-resolution (25nm) ultrastructural information in fully hydrated cell populations under native conditions. The method can be used for same-sample correlative imaging alongside technique such as fluorescence imaging/cryo-imaging, X-ray scanning microscopy and cryo-electron tomography.

This workshop is intended for graduate students and early-career researchers interested in gaining a deeper understanding and hands-on experience imaging cells in 3D using Soft X-ray Tomography at cryogenic temperatures (cryoSXT). The workshop will consist of a mixture of lectures and practicals that will demonstrate all aspects of the imaging pipeline at our beamline B24 from sample preparation to data acquisition and analysis.

On behalf of Diamond Light Source and the biological cryo-imaging B24 beamline, we invite you to apply to this Instruct-ERIC workshop.

CryoSXT has an ever-widening user-base and the requirement for investigator independence and technique ownership often relies on their ability to prepare good samples and to quickly extract meaningful information from the data acquired.

The workshop seeks to:

  • Guide you through each stage in the experimental workflow from sample preparation to data analysis with a combination of practical experiments and theory lectures delivered by scientists who pioneered and championed cryoSXT.
  • Educate about best practices, including the identification of decision points and common pitfalls.
  • Teach you to collect and analyse data from cryopreserved samples imaged using a structures illumination microscope (cryoSXT).

This workshop will be delivered on-site and in-person and spaces are limitedapplicants who are not selected for the worshop are invited to join online for the lecture component via Zoom link, but registration is still required (There will be no registration fee for online attendance).

Application and registration process

Applications are now open and places are strictly limited to 12 academic delegates. Places will be allocated on the grounds of merit and anticipated benefit. Our registration will be closing on 2nd August 2023 at 23:30 (BST)

All applicants will be informed on the result of their application first week in August. If your application is successful, there will be a £100 fee to attend the event, in person, at Diamond Light Source. Whilst places to this workshop are limited. Applicants who are not selected for the workshop are invited to join online for the lecture component.
