Wellcome-MRC Cryo-EM in Structural Biology 2025

Mar 03. till Mar 07.

Wellcome-MRC Cryo-EM in Structural Biology 2025

This course will provide fundamental lectures and practical demonstrations in cryo-EM, from sample preparation and the electron microscope, through to image formation and processing, reconstruction in SPA and cryo-ET, and model building.

This is a hybrid event targeted primarily at PhD students from our internal PhD programme and selected PhD students from the community. Lectures will be made open to the wider community via Zoom. Demonstrations and practical sessions covering sample preparation, cryo-EM screening, SPA data collection and cryo-ET are limited to in-person attendees only.

Overview

This is a hybrid event targeted at researchers new to the field, it will provide fundamental lectures and practical demonstrations in cryo-EM, from sample preparation and the electron microscope, through to image formation and processing, reconstruction in SPA and cryo-ET, and model building.

Lectures will be held in-person at Diamond Light Source and will be broadcast to the wider community via Zoom. Demonstrations and hands-on practical sessions covering sample preparation, cryo-EM screening, SPA data collection and cryo-ET will be available to in-person attendees only.

Due to limited space, in-person places will be limited:

  • Several spaces are reserved for our internal DTP Students (attendance by invitation) and are funded by the Wellcome Trust
  • Several spaces are available by application to selected PhD students from the community (applications will open in late 2024/early 2025) - these spaces are fully funded by Wellcome-MRC.

There is no fee to attend this course in-person or online but registration is mandatory. For the 5 Wellcome-MRC funded places, accommodation and food will be provided, however you will need to arrange and pay for your own travel to get to Diamond.

How to Apply

APPLICATIONS NOT YET OPEN - WILL OPEN IN LATE 2024/EARLY 2025

There are several Wellcome-MRC funded spaces available to selected PhD students from the community. Places will be allocated on the grounds of merit and anticipated benefit.

All applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • You are a PhD student new to the field and will be using cryo-EM as part of your work

Before beginning the application process please prepare the following documents to upload to the application page:

  • A cover letter describing your motivation for applying for the course, and how this will benefit your PhD research.  Please also describe your current role/position and your plans for using EM.
  • A letter of support from your PhD supervisor

If successful, you will be asked to formally accept your place and register for the event. Academic places will be free of charge and includes:

  • all meals and refreshments
  • accommodation if required, checking in on Monday 3rd March and checking out on Friday 7th March.
