Magnetic materials are comprised of magnetic moments arranged on a crystal lattice, interacting through short-range magnetic exchange interactions. This simple configuration gives rise to a remarkable diversity of magnetic ground states, whose properties depend on an intricate interplay between symmetry, charge, spin, and orbital degrees of freedom. I am mainly interested in understanding the magnetic ground states of such materials, specifically examining correlated quantum phenomena in the strong spin-orbit coupling limit. To unravel these phenomena, I grow novel materials and use a combination of X-ray and neutron diffraction and spectroscopy techniques with many colleagues at different large-scale facilities.
I am an Egyptian scientist, born in Dubai, UAE, where I have completed my undergraduate degree. After my time in the UAE, I completed my Masters degree in Sweden, afterwhich I started my PhD at the University of Birmingham and the ISIS Neutron and Muon facility under an ISIS Facility Development studentship. There, I examined quantum magnetic materials with various spin models using neutron and X-ray scattering techniques. Before starting as a beamline scientist on I16, I was a postdoctoral research associate at the Resonance Lab at the University of Birmingham.
