- 2015 – the International Year of Light
Keep up to date with the latest research and developments from Diamond. Sign up for news on our scientific output, facility updates and plans for the future.
The ancient Greek theory of light believed that the goddess Aphrodite placed a fire in each of us before birth, which allowed our eyes to cast ‘feeling rays’ onto objects around us. In the years since then, our growing knowledge of light and its potential to aid our understanding of the world around us has changed and shaped civilisation in myriad ways.
The power of light and light technology to change the world was one key reason why 2015 was named International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies by UNESCO. Events and celebrations around the globe will honour key figures in the history of light technology, from Ibn al-Haytham to the Braggs, and will showcase the brightest and best in emerging technologies and science.
At Diamond, we will be taking part in events around the UK and Europe for this exciting year. As one of the brightest lights in the world, we are proud to participate in the Year of Light, and have the chance to tell the stories of our scientists and their work to improve lives and advance science through using the synchrotron.
A major public event will take place in July this year, and will see facilities, labs and businesses across the Harwell Campus open their doors to the public. Diamond, ISIS, and the Central Laser Facility will all be taking part, and we hope to see around 10,000 visitors on July 11th. We will also be participating in science festivals and events around the UK for public groups throughout 2015. You can find out about events at your university or in your region at www.light2015.org.
UNESCO's International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies was launched in Paris this year.
