Kallinikos is originally from Greece, and moved to America when he was 17 to start his undergraduate studies at Carleton College (Minnesota). Kallinikos graduated in 2019 with a degree in chemistry (and a minor in biochemistry).

Kallinikos moved to London to pursue an MRes in Structural Molecular Biology at Imperial College London. He worked under the supervision of Dr Robert Weinzierl on elucidating the structural dynamics of an oncogenic protein, c-Myc. Kallinikos graduated from Imperial in 2021 and worked at the biotechnology company, Synthace for a short internship. Later joining the Oxford Interdisciplinary Bioscience DTP in September 2022. 

Kallinikos project is a partnership between Oxford, Diamond Light Source and the Pirbright Institute and it attempts to gain ultracellular insights into Marek's Disease virus biogenesis and spread using cryo-ET/cryo-FIB. At Diamond, Kallinikos works under the supervision of James Gilchrist.
