Diamond Light Source Ltd / Royal Society of Chemistry
- Diamond Light Source Ltd of Diamond House, Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, Didcot, Oxfordshire, OX11 0DE (“Diamond”) and The Royal Society of Chemistry of Burlington House, London, W1J 0BA (“RSC”) shall be awarding a prize to an outstanding early career researcher who has used Diamond’s facilities in a research area relevant to Chemistry and/or Materials Science.
- The competition is open to all doctoral students, post-doctoral researchers or other early career researchers who have carried out research using Diamond’s facilities in an area relevant to Chemistry and/or Materials Sciences. At the closing date for nominations, nominees should typically, taking any relevant periods of absence from research activity into account, have less than 8 years of research experience following completion of their doctorate.
- The competition is free to enter and nominations can be submitted online via the Diamond website. Nominees cannot be self-nominated and must be nominated by a person who has a direct working relationship with the nominee (e.g. as a supervisor, colleague or collaborator). The following information must also be provided by the nominator:
3.1. The nominator’s name, contact details, and details of his/her working relationship with the nominee;
3.2. The nominee’s name and contact details;
3.3. A list of relevant publications and/or intellectual property generated and/or developed and which is to be considered by the judging panel;
3.4. A supporting statement addressing the selection criteria, with particular reference to the use of synchrotron radiation in the nominee’s research; and
3.5. An up to date CV for the nominee, including a summary of his/her education and career.
- The opening date for nominations is Monday 28th November 2016. The closing time and date for nominations is 17:00 on Friday 24 March 2017. Nominations received after the closing date and time will not be considered.
- By submitting a nomination, the nominator confirms that the nomination is made in good faith, he/she confirms that the nominee has consented to sharing the information contained in clause 3 and he/she confirms that to the best of his/her knowledge the information submitted is true and accurate.
- Diamond will contact each nominee to confirm his/her nomination and to draw his/her attention to these terms and conditions. In the event that the nominee elects to participate in the competition, he/she will be bound by these terms and conditions.
- Entries will be judged against the following criteria:
7.1. Originality of research in chemistry and materials science;
7.2. Impact of research in chemistry and materials science;
7.3. Quality of publications and/or intellectual property developed;
7.4. Diamond beamline/facility use;
7.5. Professional standing; and
7.6. Collaborations and teamwork.
- The research submitted must be original and substantially the nominee’s own. It is the nominee’s responsibility to obtain, in advance of providing the consent in clause 5 and prior to electing to participate in the competition, any and all permissions needed to submit the research (or the information contained within it), and to ensure that submission does not impact any intellectual property protection for aspects of the submitted research.
- In electing to participate in the competition, the nominee confirms that he/she is eligible to do so and eligible to claim any prize that he/she may win.
- Nominees will be shortlisted by a judging panel appointed by Diamond and the winner will then be selected by Diamond’s Science Directors and a representative from the RSC, with an announcement to the scientific community to follow in April 2017.
- The winner will be notified by email in April 2017 and must provide a postal address and bank account details in order to claim their prize. If the winner does not respond to Diamond within 7 days of being notified by Diamond, then the winner's prize may be forfeited and Diamond will be entitled to select another winner. Unsuccessful nominees will not be notified.
- The winner will be invited to speak about their research at Diamond and at an RSC event to an audience of their peers and will also receive a cash prize in the amount of £500.00 (five hundred pounds). The cash prize will be transferred to the winner within 30 days of receipt of the winner’s bank account details. The prize for the winner is non-exchangeable, non-transferable and no alternative is offered. The winner shall be responsible for any tax implications associated with the cash prize.
- The winner's name and country (or county if a UK resident) can be obtained by requesting these details in an email to [email protected] following selection of the winner and before 11 June 2017.
- The judging panel and/or Science Director’s decision regarding any aspect of the competition is final and binding and no correspondence will be entered into about it. In the event that the judges decide that no entry has sufficiently fulfilled the criteria outlined above, there will be no obligation to select a winner.
- A copy of the terms and conditions can be viewed at www.diamond.ac.uk/Science/Awards/Medal/Terms-and-conditions.html. Diamond and the RSC reserve the right to refuse entry to nominees for any reason and may refuse to award the prize to anyone in breach of these terms and conditions.
