Diamond on average welcomes over 5,000 visitors onsite and about 45% of visitors to the facility are in some way related to the development of skills. As a national institute, driving scientific research in the UK for the coming decades, Diamond is committed to:
A strong network of PhDs and postdoctoral research
There are currently 24 postdoctoral fellows at Diamond, a number which will continue to grow as further beamlines become operational. Over the years, Diamond has had direct involvement in over 100 PhD studentships with UK Universities. latest opportunities are adverstised here.
Diamond is a partner in several Doctoral Training Centres across several Research Councils and is actively seeking to build capability in graduate training in synchrotron science. The primary current mechanisms are via shared Diamond studentships, training courses and workshops, all of which augment the training that is provided when students participate in experiments at Diamond. We are keen to extend all aspects of our provision and would welcome new training opportunities. Please contact the Student Engagement team
to discuss such possibilities.
Provision of beamtime for Doctoral students
Training students requires access to beamtime. Due to the high oversubscription to Diamond beamlines, we anticipate that most practical training in the future will take place via peer-reviewed access mechanisms. These include standard access, programme mode and rapid access. However we would be pleased to consider new and creative ideas for dedicated and focused training mechanisms. For details of Diamond proposal mechanisms please see here.
Visiting Professorships and practical training
16 of our scientists have been awarded Professorships by Universities across the UK which leads them to actively engage in teaching and furthering of skills within Universities. Practical training in skills and techniques has included 22 events since 2009. Some of these are recurring events, for example MX BAG training, the Synchrotron Summer School and the XAS workshop; others are ad-hoc, or associated with a one off event. We view workshops and meetings as a vital tool for introducing the user community to Diamond techniques and instrumentation.
