Techniques and Disciplines

Stefano Agrestini joined the I21 team in November 2019. Dr. Agrestini obtained the PhD in Material Science at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. Afterwards he worked as postdoctoral research assistant for seven years (more precisely, two years at the University of Rome, three years at the University of Warwick in England, and two years at the Laboratoire CRISMAT of Caen in France) before joining the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids of Dresden in Germany for 7 years. From October 2017 to October 2019 he was a member of the team of the XMCD BOREAS beamline, ALBA-CELLS synchrotron in Barcelona. Dr. Agrestini has a deep knowledge of full atomic multiplet and ligand field theory and, together with Prof. Frank De Groot, Utrecht University, organized a 3 days school (4-6 June 2018) of crystal field and ligand field calculations of XAS, XMCD, RIXS e XPS spectra at the ALBA Synchrotron. Presently, in Diamond he uses his theoretical expertise to simulate and interpret d-d and charge transfer excitations in RIXS spectra. His scientific focus is on the study of the interplay between lattice, magnetic and electronic properties in highly correlated systems, exhibiting phenomena such as Metal-Insulator transition, Colossal Magneto-Resistance, and high Tc superconductivity, and on the role played by crystal field and spin-orbit coupling in determining the ground state symmetry of 4d and 5d transition metal compounds. Besides providing user support as local contact and developing his own research program, he has been manager of the project for the new air-pads system needed for the free-rotation of the 12 tons spectrometer arm of
