Overview

The goal of this iNEXT-Discovery course is to teach users the best practices in sample preparation for single particle analysis cryo-EM imaging. The course will include lectures but otherwise principally be hands-on, with students preparing vitrified samples on  plunge-freezing devices including a demo of the chameleon next generation freezing device. Clipping and loading for Thermo Fisher Scientific autoloaders will also be demonstrated. Students will screen the samples they freeze with an eBIC Titan Krios microscope.

This course will be geared toward researchers who are actively using cryoEM for their research bt are relatively new to the field of cryo-EM. The course is open to academic and industrial applicants. The course is funded by iNext & Diamond Light Source. This funding includes the cost of the course, accommodation and subsidence.  However, you will need to cover the cost of your travel to and from the course. Industrial applicants will be able to access the course on a chargeable basis.

Applicants must show they are using cryo-EM as part of their research and have access to a plunge-freezing device. The course aims to equip participants with the necessary skill set to further develop their cryo-EM expertise at their home institutes and eBIC. Several biological test samples will be provided allowing participants hands on experience with a variety of samples.

Application process for academic and industry participants

Places are strictly limited to 12 academic delegates. Places will be allocated on the grounds of merit and anticipated benefit. 4 industry delegates will be selected by eBIC for industry.

All applicants must meet the following criteria:

• You have access to a plunge freezing device.
