FTP - transferring small data sets

• Download an FTP client software

The following example is for WinSCP, which you can download from here.

• Open the FTP client software to log in
• Select 'FTP' and 'TLS/SSL Explicit Encryption
  
• Paste in the following Host name:
  
  
  
• Port number: 21
• Enter your FedID and password

• Certificate warning: Click 'Yes'

• Browse to your session folder in the right-hand window

• Drag and drop your selected folder or files to your file system

• Do not let your computer go to sleep during the transfer

If it is taking a long time, try our transfer system for large datasets (>20GB) here.

There are many command line ftp clients available for Linux. It is known that "lftp" is compatible with explicit encryption required by the Diamond FTP server. "lftp" is available for most Linux distributions in the standard software repositories.

Type the following into your terminal:

lftp is a very powerful client capable of resilient and parallel transfers. Read the man page for full details. You will probably need to set the following option:

Alternatively, use a graphical ftp client such as FileZilla.

• Start Filezilla and select 'File' -> 'Site manager'
  
• Create a new site - called e.g.  'FEDECKS'
  
• Hostname: fedecks.diamond.ac.uk - Port 21
  
• Select 'FTP' and 'Require Explicit FTP over TLS
• Select preferred Logon Type (e.g. Ask for Password)
• Enter your FedID.
  

• Click 'Connect' and you will be prompted for your password - Enter your fedid password.
• You will next be prompted to accept the unknown certificate. Check the detail and click 'OK'

• You will now connect and see your visit data in the Right-hand panel

• Drag the required files from the right-hand panel to the appropriate location in the Left-hand panel

• Drag the required files from the right-hand panel to the appropriate location in the left-hand panel
