The Detector Group at Diamond provides support and assistance to the beamline scientists in order to provide a number of different types of specialised radiation detectors for synchrotron experiments. The activity of the Detector Group ranges from purchasing off-the-shelf detectors to developing new cutting edge detectors.
Radiation detection is an interdisciplinary field, therefore the Detector Group staff includes people with physics, electronics engineering, and technical backgrounds.
The day to day work of the Detector Group consists of helping the beamline scientists in mounting, installing, and commissioning detectors and ancillary equipment; in fault finding, and in data validation. A broader scope activity consists of keeping abreast with the latest developments in detection technology, envisioning future detector developments for new experiments, and staying in touch with major international detector developers and users.
The Detector Group has an important detector development programme, and it has participated in a number of international collaborations to develop new detectors.
ExcaliburRX is a large area photon counting detector based on the Medipix3RX read out chip. ExcaliburRX was developed in collaboration with STFC and it is now in operation on the beam line I13 in the coherent diffractive imaging branch and on the I14 hard x-ray nanoprobe beamline.
Xspress4 is an active development project at Diamond Light Source tasked with delivering a state-of-the-art Digital Pulse Processor (DPP) for use on Spectroscopy beamlines that will provide better resolution and lower background than current systems.
Diamond Light Source is the UK's national synchrotron science facility, located at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire.
