"Just wanted to thank you for the extremely high quality experience our Physics students had when we visited your site last month. Judging by the feedback I got from the students, this was the best outreach activity they had experienced in physics. Your staff were extremely informative and interesting, but most importantly were able to explain things to our students at a level which they could understand and relate to easily."
Inside Diamond Schools is a series of events aimed at A-level or equivalent students, welcoming them to Diamond to meet our scientists, find out about the exciting work taking place here, and have a tour of the synchrotron itself.
We hope that by visiting Diamond students will learn more about the practical application of their studies and it will stir their interest in science and engineering and perhaps encourage them towards further study.
Diamond is a particle accelerator that uses a beam of electrons travelling at almost the speed of light to create intense, powerful beams of light. We use this light to study the atomic and molecular structure of materials - everything from viral proteins to engine parts and ancient texts - to help scientists understand more about the way the world works.
A visit will take approximately 2/2.5 hours and will consist of:
Diamond offers these open days free of charge to schools.
In Person Visits

The session start times for in person visits are:
Due to the nature of the facility we can only accommodate a limited number of 'in person' visitors and to ensure that many schools can partake we limit tickets to 24 people per booking (please note this number includes students AND staff). As in-person events are usually oversubscribed we operate a random ballot for places, and to ensure Diamond reaches diverse audiences we ensure that at least 50% of schools offered tickets are non-fee paying state schools.
Advice/Restrictions:
The ballots for the 2025 Inside Diamond Schools Open Days are open. Please note the following closing dates for ballot applications:
