This position is to lead the VMXi macromolecular crystallography (MX) beamline at Diamond Light Source. VMXi is a unique beamline, designed specifically for automated data collection with in situ crystallisation experiments and serial data collection. It is equipped with Formulatrix plate hotels linked via robotics to the data collection system for automated screening and data collection, coordinated for users via the ISPyB SynchWeb interface. High flux (10e14 ph/s) beam is available via a double multilayer monochromator as well as a more conventional double crystal monochromator (10e12 ph/s) opening up significant potential to exploit serial data collection methods alongside in situ data collection. To this end a modular sample environment is being developed. The principal beamline scientist will lead the beamline team and work closely with colleagues within the MX group to lead the continued development and evolution of the beamline.
Suitable candidates will have expertise in macromolecular crystallographic techniques as applied at synchrotron beamlines and a broad outlook in integrated structural biology. The Principal Beamline Scientist will help maintain the beamline, and provide user support by assisting visiting scientists to carry out a wide range of experiments. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an internationally competitive research programme which exploits the capabilities of VMXi and Diamond facilities in general.
The MX village at Diamond presents 7 world-leading MX beamlines with unique capabilities and is complemented by dedicated beamlines for BIOSAXS, CD, X-ray imaging and spectroscopy, IR-microspectroscopy and currently the world’s largest Cryo-EM centre (eBIC). In addition the village has established the first dedicated X-ray fragment screening lab (X-Chem) and an XFEL hub which hosts users, and directs UK developments at the SPB/SFX instrument at the European XFEL. There is a strong software development programme that includes lead development of the DIALS integration software package, ISPyB/Synchweb and automation pipelines as well as collaborative projects with CCP4. This is complemented by provision of state of the art laboratories for structural biology within the Research Complex at Harwell.
The successful candidate will be provided with funding for 1 post doctoral research fellow (subject to a suitable case being made), the opportunity for PhD studentships within Diamond’s PhD fellowship programme and support for external funding through national and international funding agencies to take full advantage of the stimulating and exciting international research environment at Diamond.
