Biography

David completed his integrated master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering at The University of Manchester in 2016, where his master’s thesis focused on the processing of spectroscopy data of nanoscale core-shell precipitates in zirconium alloys for nuclear fuel cladding applications, supervised by Dr. Christopher Race. He then went on to a Ph.D. as part of the Graphene NoWNano Centre for Doctoral Training at The University of Manchester, supervised by Prof. Sarah Haigh and Dr. David Lewis.

His Ph.D. investigated the structures and properties of novel 2D materials with high resolution, aberration-corrected TEM and STEM. In 2019, he was awarded the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Summer Programme research fellowship, where he spent 2 months researching the ferromagnetic domain structure in magnetic 2D materials via Lorentz mode DPC-STEM at The University of Tokyo, supervised by Prof. Naoya Shibata.

After completing his Ph.D. in 2020, David continued his research as a postdoctoral researcher with Prof. Haigh, before joining ePSIC in April 2022. His research focuses around the structural analysis of defects in 2D materials using high resolution imaging and 4D-STEM, with particular interest in local modification of electric and magnetic field states. As an electron microscopy scientist at ePSIC, his role includes microscope operation, technique development, and user support with experimental design and execution.
