On 9th November we welcomed 35 industrial scientists to the first Diamond Energy Network meeting. Participants predominantly came from the local area with a few from abroad, all of whom were scientists actively working in energy R&D representing companies both large and small.
The goal of the meeting was to bring together scientists working in different aspects of energy R+D who often experience similar challenges in their research activities but rarely have the opportunity to meet and discuss them. It was also an opportunity to showcase the range of analytical techniques in use by industry for energy research and development and to highlight the opportunities for industrial research at the Diamond Light Source, particularly for complex, in situ or dynamic experiments that can be difficult or impossible using lab-based techniques.
With talks from Dr Peter Hutchins from Infineum, Dr Dominique Bernard from ICMCB Bordeaux, Dr Laura Richard from Oxford Catalysts, Dr Helen Thompson from National Nuclear Laboratory and Dr Anna Kroner with an overview of applied catalysis research here at Diamond.
The talks were followed by a vibrant networking and discussion session (and cake!) with brief tours of the facility to those who were interested. All the feedback for the event has been extremely positive with every delegate planning to attend future meetings and many willing to contribute talks in future.
We hope that this will be the start in a series of local energy networking meetings and are looking forward to the next event. If you would like to participate in any future events or have suggestions for themes, we'd like to hear from you! You can e-mail us at [email protected] or call us on 01235 778797.
Are you working in energy R&D? Would you like to meet other scientists working in your area?
Following on from the success of our recent newtorking event, we're planning to host future similar events. If you would like to be kept informed, please contact [email protected] or call Elizabeth on 01235 778797 for more information.
