Project M - Terms and Conditions

Diamond Light Source Ltd of Diamond House, Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, Didcot, Oxfordshire, OX11 0DE (“Diamond”) shall be awarding 100 schools the opportunity to participate in Project M.
Project M (“the Project”) is a scientific research project where Diamond will analyse 1000 samples of the mineral calcium carbonate using their Beamline I11 over a 24-hour period in April 2017.
Registration is free and open to all secondary education schools located within the United Kingdom.
Registration will close on Wednesday 21^st December at 5pm and only one registration per school is allowed. Any registration received after the closing date and time will not be considered.
Registration will be reviewed by an internal department at Diamond and 100 schools will be selected to participate in the Project (“the Participating Schools”). These schools will be notified within three weeks of the closing date. If a school has not been notified by this timeframe, then they should assume that they have been unsuccessful. Diamond’s decision regarding the selection of the Participating Schools is final and binding and no correspondence will be entered into about it.
If a Participating School wishes to withdraw from the Project after selection they may do so by providing Diamond with notice in writing to [email protected]. Diamond shall be entitled to select another registered school to replace the school that has withdrawn.
The Participating Schools name and location will be published on the Diamond website with integration into Google Maps.
Diamond will distribute a project pack to each Participating School within 30 days after being selected. Each pack will contain equipment, instructions and instructional videos (“the Project Pack”). Each Participating School will allocate two 45 minute sessions, at least one week apart, to collect 10 samples of calcium carbonate. These samples are to be mixed (according to the instructions provided) with the specially selected additives available in the Project Pack. It is the responsibility of each Participating School to carry out their own risk detailed assessment for the Project taking the needs of their learners and teaching spaces into account. A basic risk assessment is provided in the Project Pack to assist teachers.
It is the responsibility of each Participating School to return the samples, packed and labelled according to the instructions provided in the Project Pack, via the pre-paid envelope addressed to Diamond, which will be included in the Project Pack, by Monday 20th March 2017. The Participating Schools shall keep the remaining equipment from the Project Packs for use at their school.
Diamond shall at its discretion use the samples provided by the Participating Schools on the designated date in April 2017 or at a later date as decided by Diamond.
Diamond will make available the results of the 10 submitted samples to each Participating School within 30 days after the research has been conducted.
All of the intellectual property and any arising results from the Project will be owned by Diamond. Diamond grants the Participating Schools a royalty free, irrevocable, non-transferable, non-commercial, non-exclusive, licence to use the data collected from their 10 samples for internal teaching and related educational purposes.
Diamond intends to publish the research arising out of the Project on an Open Access basis on a date decided by Diamond and in accordance with Diamond’s Publications and Open Access Policy. Any publication will include recognition of the Participating Schools and may include personal data including student names and teacher names as well as school names and addresses.
All results arising out of the Project must remain confidential prior to any publication by Diamond. Participating Schools may share the plot of results for their 10 submitted samples with parents or in school publications. Any Participating School wishing to disclose any raw data results to a third party must seek permission from Diamond in advance.
Participating Schools may be required to participate in publicity relating to the Project which could include the publication of the name of the school, student names, teacher names and photographs in the media.
Any photographs and data from the Project may be used for marketing, promotional or educational purposes, in scientific journals/publications or Diamond publications including press releases, internal and external email and print communications, in presentations or talks given to Diamond staff, the general public and scientific audiences. Any data provided may be used to notify Participating Schools about services offered by Diamond, including workshops, announcements and newsletters. If chosen on the registration form, any data supplied will only be used to notify Participating Schools with correspondence relating to the Project. Any personally identifiable data will be processed in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.
It is the responsibility of the Participating Schools to obtain any and all permissions from teachers, students and/or parents as needed to comply with the terms and conditions of the Project.
Diamond will not be responsible for any expenses which are incurred by any Participating School in connection with the Project.
Diamond accepts no responsibility for registration not successfully completed due to a technical fault (including, but not limited to technical malfunction, computer hardware or software failure, satellite, network or server failure) of any kind.
All schools who register are deemed to have accepted and agreed to be bound by these terms and conditions upon registration. Diamond reserves the right to refuse registration, or refuse to include a Participating School in the Project in breach of these terms and conditions.
Any data provided in connection with the Project can be used for monitoring purposes.
Insofar as is permitted by law, Diamond’s liability for any loss or damage arising from the Project shall be limited to an amount of £100.00.
The Registration and Project will be governed by English Law and schools who complete Registration submit to the jurisdiction of the English Courts.
