B07 is a bending magnet beamline and therefore is particularly well-suited to samples that are extremely beam sensitive because of the relatively low energy resolution and photon flux used. Furthermore, the non-standard sample environments and detection techniques available on B07 are either not usually found or else not possible at standard 3rd generation synchrotron soft x-ray beamlines allowing a particularly diverse range of scientific areas to benefit from this facility.
The capability of performing XPS and NEXAFS experiments at near-ambient pressures (up to ~100 mbar) will enable studying the surface composition of heterogenous catalysts under working conditions as opposed to conventional ex situ characterisation. Read more...
B07 allows characterisation of biological and pharmacetical samples under equilibrium water-vapour conditions (32 mbar at room temperature; 60 mbar at 36 °C). Read more...
Direct spectroscopy of liquid surfaces, either in jets or toughs, will offer insight into atmospheric chemistry of aerosols. A gas mixing rig setup will also be available to allow introducing complex gas mixtures in situ into reaction vessels on the high pressure end station. Read more...
VERSOX will allow the application of non-destructive synchrotron techniques to probe changes in the surface and structual properties of materials under reactive conditions and aims to provide insight into the impact of atmospheric pollution, identifying process leading to weathering or decay phenomena, as well as furthering our understanding of the kinetics of decay processes. Synchrotron soft x-rays, such as those available on the VERSOX beamline, directly probe electronic states and chemical bonding enabling local structure to be directly correlated with electronic and photonic performance at the nanoscale. Read more...
