The ePSIC is the result of collaboration between UK catalyst and chemicals company Johnson Matthey, the University of Oxford, and Diamond Light Source. The facility, co-housed with the new electron Bio-Imaging Centre (eBIC) and beamline I14, will benefit from the complementary nature of the techniques and shared approaches in sample preparation methods.
Oxford University have installed a unique JEOL ARM300CF atomic resolution electron microscope, which allows ultra high resolution TEM and STEM imaging in several modes over a range of voltages, essential in studies of catalysts and other nanoparticulate systems and low dimensional materials. Johnson Matthey have installed a world-leading JEOL double-EDX and EELS capable microscope - JEOL ARM200F - which allows for high resolution imaging and spectroscopy and atomic-resolution elemental mapping by EELS and XEDS, applicable to studies of catalysts and other nanoparticulate systems and enable analyses at nearduty catalytic conditions to observe the influence of chemical and thermal challenges on material structure.
Alongside access for researchers involved in the collaboration, the ePSIC will offer access to external users from both academia and industry; further enhancing the quality of the science generated and competitiveness of UK-based industry.
Diamond Light Source is the UK's national synchrotron science facility, located at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire.
