This project will see you working with electron microscopists at Diamond in order to improve the analysis of atomic resolution images of inorganic nanoparticles. The world-leading electron microscopy facilities are able to acquire images of thousands of nanoparticles at atomic resolution in the space of a few hours. This revolution in automated imaging allows the reconstruction in three dimensions of nanoparticles at atomic resolution.
However, the techniques for analysing these datasets are still limited in the number of nanoparticle systems they can be used on. In this project you will extend the applicability by developing new techniques for image segmentation and analysis. You will implement trainable segmentation of nanoparticle images, using a machine learning approach. You will also develop techniques for analysing the crystal structure and orientation of nanoparticles. These two developments will allow users of the electron microscopy facilities to perform 3D reconstruction of a much wider variety of nanoparticle samples.
