Data transfer - rsync

Diamond provides access to an SSH service which can be used for associated data transports such as SFTP and RSYNC. However, we do not recommend this for large transfers due to some serious performance issues associated with the SSH transport layer.

The Linux 'rsync' utility can be used for copying files or directory structures either internally on a machine or across a network.

  • Linux and Mac

rsync can be used on either a Linux or Mac platform from the command line interface. i.e. a shell or terminal window.

rsync commands are of the general format

rsync [options] SRC... [DEST]

See man page for more detail or below for an example.

To download file from Diamond with rsync, connect via the 'ssh' server as follows. For example, to download files from a beamline experiment to the /home/phil/mydata/ on your local system. Note the trailing '/' at the end of the source location - This ensures that the files within ~/somedata are downloaded - If the '/' was omitted, the ~/somedata directory itself would be downloaded:-

phil@phil ~/mydata $ rsync -av [email protected]:/dls/i31/data/2016/pj12345-1/somedata/ /home/phil/mydata/
