Diamond Appoints Artists in Residence

Diamond has appointed a trio of artists to have a presence on site and work with members of the science team over the next 12 months. This follows the ground-breaking Designs for Life project - a collaboration with the Women's Institute. The artists in residence appointed by Diamond come from a range of  backgrounds - textile artist Ann Griffiths, painter Sharon Wyper, and sculptor Paula Groves. Each of them will work towards creating an art piece for a specific location at the synchrotron.

Isabelle Boscaro Clarke, Head of Communications, explains, "Having three artists in residence at Diamond to experience some of our very first scientific endeavours is very exciting for our scientists and for the artists, all of whom approached us and expressed a keen interest in the facility. Through art we hope to imaginatively highlight the work of the synchrotron and build on the local community involvement in Diamond."

Each artist has been tasked with coming up with a theme for their work and ideas for community projects that will help to influence the finished pieces. They will also keep a diary of their experiences and thoughts so that people viewing the art pieces can get a really good understanding of how each one came about.

Sharon Wyper, painter and art teacher adds, "I am personally keen to explore what we can do to involve members of the local community. Diamond is a fascinating place and I am looking forward to engaging creatively with discoveries at the cutting edge of science."
