Beamline Development and Technical Summary

By the end of the ninth year of experiments (April 2015 to end of March 2016), Diamond was operating with 26 beamlines. Two Phase III beamlines, I23 and I15-1, have now entered into commissioning phase, and the next two years will see five more Phase III beamlines complete construction and go into operation. The final Phase III beamline, DIAD (part funded by the University of Birmingham), was recently approved. Its completion, along with the switchover of I02 to VMXi (I02-2), will see the total number of beamlines at 33. Diamond is also set to operate four electron microscopes; two high-resolution cryo-electron microscopes for the life sciences and two high-resolution electron microscopes for advanced materials research. The two cryo-electron microscopes are part of eBIC (electron Bio-Imaging Centre) and will initially be housed in the main synchrotron building, where the first Titan Krios I is already in operation. The second will follow later this year. The two microscopes for materials research will be supplied by Johnson Matthey and Oxford University and operated under strategic collaboration agreements to provide for substantial dedicated peer-reviewed user access.
