EMBO is an international organisation of more than 2,000 life scientists. The organisation is celebrating its 60th anniversary and marked this milestone by electing 100 new members and 20 associate members.
Prof Zhang is leading eBIC which has become a world-leading centre for research, expertise and training in cryogenic electron microscopy. Her research programme is aimed at an integrated, atomistic understanding of the molecular mechanisms of human virus infections. To achieve this, her team is developing novel technologies for high-resolution in situ and correlated cryo-EM/ET, combined with advanced computational methods including machine learning. She is also a Professor of Structural Biology at the Nuffield Department of Medicine at Oxford University.
She obtained a BS in Electrical Engineering and MS in Solid State Physics from Nanjing University, and PhD in Biophysics and Physiology from the University of Virginia. She was a post-doctoral fellow and subsequently a staff scientist at the National Cancer Institute, and then an assistant professor and a tenured associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She joined Diamond Light Source and Oxford University in 2016.
Prof Zhang has already been recognised for her exceptional standing in her field. Her election to EMBO membership is added to a list of many awards and accolades, including the Carnegie Science Emerging Female Scientist Award and Wellcome Trust Investigator Award.
Dr Zhang said: “I am thrilled to be elected a member of EMBO. I look forward to becoming a part of such an incredible group of scientists and contributing to EMBO’s goal to further strengthen European science.”
As a member of EMBO, Prof Zhang will use her considerable expertise to assist in the execution of the organisation’s programmes and activities, such as evaluating funding applications, serving on the council and committees, and contributing to initiatives such as training, policy, outreach and mentorship.
EMBO's aim is to support talented researchers at all stages of their careers, stimulate the exchange of scientific information, and help build a European research environment where scientists can achieve their best work. EMBO directs funding from its member states towards research fellowships, courses, workshops, conferences, and science policy initiatives, and also has a range of prestigious journals.
EMBO Director Fiona Watt said: “The new EMBO members and associate members have made immense contributions to fundamental life science research, and, in many cases, their work has paved the way for innovations that have improved lives and livelihoods around the world. As EMBO marks its 60th anniversary, we celebrate the pivotal roles played by the EMBO Membership in strengthening international life science research and contributing to the EMBO programmes and activities. I send my warmest congratulations to all those elected.”
EMBO was founded on 12 July 1964 to advance molecular biology in Europe. Today, EMBO is an organisation of more than 2,000 leading researchers that promotes excellence in the life sciences in Europe and beyond. EMBO has supported thousands of talented researchers at different stages of their careers, stimulated the exchange of scientific information, advanced scientific publishing and helped build a research environment in which scientists can achieve their best work. It is funded by the European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC). The EMBC, founded in 1969, is an inter-governmental organisation that comprises 31 member states. EMBO and EMBC also cooperate with countries and organisations beyond Europe to foster interactions with scientific communities elsewhere.
