Diamond has received confirmation of investment for the first year of the initial phase of the project that will support the delivery of a technical design report for the machine, progress the instrument concepts, and initiate work on the most pressing data and computational challenges that come with 4th generation synchrotrons. We are grateful to be able to proceed with final preparations for Diamond-II.
The full preliminary funding for Diamond-II being sought is in total £6.2 million from STFC and Wellcome each respectively contributing 86% and 14% of the value in line with the joint venture agreement. STFC has agreed to finance this fiscal year for £2.5 million and the Wellcome Trust will cover £0.4 million. Whilst we have received confirmation for this fiscal year only, we have a commitment to support the remaining funding next year. The funding secured for this fiscal year, and the commitment to further support the programme initiation phase next year, is an important milestone.
To continue delivering the world-changing science that Diamond leads and enables, Diamond-II is a co-ordinated programme of development that combines a new machine and new beamlines with a comprehensive series of upgrades to optics, detectors, sample environments, sample delivery capabilities and computing. The user experience will be further enhanced through access to integrated and correlative methods as well as broad application of automation in both instrumentation and analysis. Diamond-II will be transformative in both spatial resolution and throughput and will offer users streamlined access to enhanced instruments for life and physical sciences.
