Recent events have shone a spotlight on racial inequality worldwide, both on a personal and at a structural scale. In light of this, we would like to share our CEO's thoughts in direct response to the Black Lives Matter movement and outline our commitment to taking a stand against racism as an organisation.
In addition, we would also like to share the measurable steps that we will undertake in the year ahead to support our Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) staff and students working for us to make Diamond an even better place to work.
“We are living through a period of great change, and a global drive towards equality. Recent events in America have sent shockwaves around the world, and the Black Lives Matter movement has been front page news across every continent.
Racism remains an endemic challenge within all societies and at Diamond we must raise our voice for equality. There is still much work for all of us to do, to redress the balance, and Diamond is firmly committed to taking ownership of the changes we need to make as an organisation to help drive forward positive change.
We acknowledge that we can do even more to attract Black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) students and professionals to Diamond, and we pledge to do better on representation and opportunity. We launched our EDI Strategy and Goals last year and have included actions on increasing representation of BAME students and professionals in our Athena SWAN plans to make sure Diamond is even more diverse and inclusive.
Diamond must be a place that everyone is welcome and is given the support needed to achieve their very best. In this way we can together continue to achieve excellence. If we have learnt anything over the past few months, it’s that we are stronger when we are kind, caring and united.
Andrew Harrison, CEO Diamond Light Source
