Geomechanics involves studying the mechanical behaviour of geological materials under the influence of natural physical factors; in particular the change in structure/behaviours while interacting within different environments.
This field is particularly pertinent to current environmental challenges and is extremely important in the field of oil and gas exploration.
Scientists from Labman Automation Ltd, Diamond and ISIS used a combination of non-destructive imaging techniques to study different microstructural aspects of pile installation in chalk.
They used neutron X-ray computed tomography at ISIS and synchrotron X-ray computed tomography at Diamond to observe the interaction between installation-induced changes in chalk density and water distribution variations.
This study has enabled the team to assess the merits of this combined method for correlative bulk density–moisture content determination which can be refined for future applications.
