There will be a one day meeting on the "Scientific Potential of Free Electron Lasers", which will take place at The Royal Society, London, on Thursday 22nd April 2010.
The aim of this meeting is to bring together UK scientists from across all relevant disciplines who have an interest in exploring the use of such Free Electron Lasers for the formation of the UK FEL Users Science Group. The spectacular results now being obtained from these machines (and the prospect of others soon to come on line around the world) indicate that the time is ripe for the scientific community to engage and work with the UK research councils to explore ways in which access for UK users can be facilitated, and to help motivate the development of an international strategy in FEL science for the UK, including the requirements for appropriate funding being made available for the exploitation of these extraordinary machines.
