What Does Diamond Do? Health and Medicine

Cancer-killing T-cells

Research at Diamond is looking to harness the power of T-cells, a type of white blood cell which fights infection, to target cancerous cells. The findings are now being used to develop new therapies for cancer.

Mental health marvels

Using Diamond’s bright beams, scientists have determined the exact structure of a molecule in the brain that is involved in stress and can cause anxiety and depression. The finding could be an early step in developing new drug treatments for these conditions.

Combatting dementia

Alzheimer’s is a devastating condition that we know very little about. Researchers are using Diamond to detect and evidence biological processes that alter in Alzheimer’s. Their work may contribute to treatments that protect against progression of the disease.

Advancing antibiotics

Diamond is helping to combat the rise of antibiotic resistant bugs by allowing scientists to uncover the mechanisms by which bacteria defend themselves against drugs. A group of scientists have used Diamond to determine how certain bacteria construct their outer layer of defence, providing a target for new classes of antibiotics that would sidestep current resistance mechanisms.

Virus evolution

There are more viruses on Earth than all bacteria, plant and animal life combined, and they can evolve much faster than any living thing. Research at Diamond is helping us to understand more about the way viruses evolve; this knowledge prepares us to tackle viruses that pose a serious threat now and in the future

Ideal implants

Hip implants parts rub against each other, causing small metal particles to enter into the body’s bone cells where they can have a toxic effect. Scientists at Diamond have found that a specific type of drug can be taken to reduce the entry of metal particles into bone cells, a finding that could help to reduce implant failures.
