Job Description

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s synchrotron. It works like a giant microscope, harnessing the power of electrons to produce bright light that scientists can use to study anything from fossils to jet engines to viruses and vaccines.

The institute has been operational since 2007 with academic users utilising our unique facilities to experiments which are resulting in peer-reviewed publications. Our database is now close to 5,000 records and growing rapidly. We would like to appoint a librarian and information administrator to support the growth of activities. Accurate and timely update of the system is critical to the operation of Diamond and its reporting.  The ideal candidate will be customer focussed with an amazing attention to details matched with a can do attitude.  You will join a dynamic team who primary focussed is to communicate and disseminate the startling scientific outputs of both our staff and our user community.

Key responsibilities:

Publications database

  • Review 4000 + datasets for the publication database and manage the process of reattributing categories and tags as required as well as funding sources for each published paper
  • Search for new publications relating to work undertaken at Diamond defining categories using librarian tools such as web of science and associated systems
  • Catalogue the information swiftly and effectively by liaising as necessary with academics involved
  • Produce monthly reports for the database and associated statistics
  • Work with the digital and communication software engineer to continually enhance the administration interface of the system and develop new functionalities required to help automate data management as much as possible.

Magazines and newspaper

  • Manage the newspaper licence agreement
  • Working with STFC library services, facilitate access to journals for diamond scientists and staff
  • Maintaining relationships with collaborators like the British Library, STFC, RCUK etc.
  • Review and identify scientific articles through regular impact factor assessment for subsequent use in science highlights and other communications related activities.

Open access

  • Facilitate and administer the open access process (gold and green) for Diamond in collaboration with our legal department
  • Negotiate discounts for Gold access as required
  • Develop the content of the publication database to create a repository of both Gold Open access articles and green ones.

Information management

  • Ensure full alignment of naming, categories and tagging is in place for science highlights, case-studies and scientific papers delivered by the facility
  • Provide intelligence to the Contracts Manager about range of subscriptions required by Diamond scientists
  • Support researchers with literature searches using databases, printed resources and the internet
  • Identify and deliver training related to information management for scientists staff
  • Work with the Head of communication in developing a long-term archive for corporate information – video, images etc.

Qualification & Experience - Essential

  • Qualified and experienced librarian or in information management;
  • Ability to catalogue and administer systems swiftly and accurately;
  • Excellent IT skills, and knowledge from MS office to specialist packages, such as, web of science;
  • Ability to communicate effectively across all areas of the organisation;
  • Expertise in online searching using both the Internet and subscription services;
  • Experience in data entry and cataloguing;
  • A confident and welcoming manner with a can do attitude;
  • Excellent attention to detail.

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

  • Chartered Institute of library and Information Professionals;
  • Experience of working in a similar environment;
  • Strong interest in scientific literature;
  • Working collaboratively with a wide cultural mix of staff and scientists.
