Oxfordshire residents are invited to take part in Diamond’s short story writing competition. Light Reading calls for participants to write a story up to 3,000 words, in any genre, inspired in some way by the science facility. Today saw the announcement of the winner of the staff pilot competition, which proved to be a great success.
“I’ve been writing for years, as and when an idea came along, but trying to draw inspiration from something specific was actually really difficult. I started out on a completely different story (the unexpected side-effects of a successful career in the Evil Henchman’s Union – free energy, massive data storage, cure for the common cold AND cancer, genuinely healthy ice-creams that really tastes like ice-cream, etc) and struggled through quite a lot of it before I happened to read the poem Ozymandias; the idea for Ozymandias Awakes formed quickly and clearly after that and I wrote most of it in just a few sittings. I’m very chuffed to have won!”Winner, Matt Maddock
Software Systems Engineer Linda Pratt’s story ‘Bunny and Young Crow’, about a bird unsuccessfully trying to outdo his rabbit friend, was chosen as the runner-up. Competition judge and local author Ben Jeapes said, “It is original and enjoyably offbeat, with elements of a classic fable story, with Diamond as backdrop. A surprising entry, and very enjoyable.”
