Work by researchers at Diamond Light Source, the UK’s national synchrotron facility, has resulted in over 1,000 publications, just three years after its formal opening.
This total includes peer-reviewed journal and conference papers published by researchers using experimental data collected at Diamond, and by staff scientists and technicians. Many of the papers are published in leading scientific journals.
Diamond opened in 2007 with seven experimental stations or beamlines in operation. It has now expanded to 18 beamlines, another four are due to come on stream by 2012 and a further ten planned for completion by 2018, bringing the total to 32. Diamond is already a world class facility, the largest medium energy light source in the world and unique in Europe.
The Diamond synchrotron generates brilliant beams of light, from infra-red to X-rays, enabling researchers to conduct pioneering research across the life and physical sciences. As well as providing vital clues to the complex structure and properties of matter at molecular and atomic scales, this underpins innovation and development in industrial applications such as pharmaceuticals and health, nanotechnology, engineering, energy and environmental technologies.
“Diamond is a national facility that enables research in all areas of science. It is very encouraging that after just three years of operation, we have been able to make a significant contribution, and this is reflected in the breadth and impact of our published work. This is an exciting time, and as we develop new beamline technology, we look forward to expanding our research capabilities, enabling more new discoveries and working with industry partners to support innovation and economic development.”Professor Trevor Rayment, Physical Sciences Director
