Understanding the complex relationship between the onset of damage and its progression in different biostructures is very challenging, and traditional in situ time-lapsed methods may not capture the full dynamic strain mechanisms that take place.
In this study, scientists from Biotrics Bioimplants AG, the University of Portsmouth, and Swansea University combine X-ray tomography (microCT ) and in situ mechanical testing to characterise the local strain-damage relationship of bone tissue.
The ability to capture fast imaging in real-time enables scientists to fully understand the mechanical behaviour of the bone tissue when subjected to stresses and strains. These results lay the foundations for further studies of this kind, with the potential to extend to other highly viscoelastic biomaterials and soft tissues.
