Understanding the physiochemical changes of a modified Y-zeolite

Zeolite Y is an effective catalyst used in the petroleum industry for refining purposes. The acidity and surface area of zeolites determine their catalytic properties and these properties can be modified by altering the amount of silicon/alumium oxide present.  

Following microwave-assisted dealumination (the removal of alumina) and an alkaline treatment, scientists from SINOPEC used infrared imaging and microspectroscopy at Diamond to get a better understanding of the changes in the physiochemical properties of the Y-zeolite.
