When the Mount Polley mine tailings dam failed, it resulted in 25 million m3 of material being discharged into the surrounding area; this was the second-largest failure by volume ever recorded.
A team from the University of Exeter used XANES technique at Diamond to study samples from around the site to understand the fate of potentially toxic V species in the discharge and determine the effects on the local ecosystems.
Take a look at our case study to see what they found.
