Providing nutrient-rich food in regions where this is lacking is considered a high priority in many countries. Selenium has shown to be beneficial for human health, and has been added to many foods, along with plant biostimulants to enhance nutritional efficiency, abiotic stress tolerance and crop quality.
In this paper, scientists used microfocused X-ray fluorescence mapping (XRF) and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) on Diamond’s I18 beamline to investigate the Se location in wheat grain and its chemical speciation at different stages of wheat growth.
This information will be useful to minimize both plant toxicity and reduce costs for a plant-healthy selenium enrichment treatment for crops.
