On Diamond Windows computer, all printers should be automatically available. If you wish to print from a non-Diamond Windows computer on the visitors network, Please follow the instructions below.

• Log in to any computer, and in your chosen browser, enter following in the address bar:

This will bring up a list of all available printers.

• Select the required printer, right-click and choose "Connect.." See below.

The driver will be automatically installed and the printer made available on the system.

Alternatively, open the "Printers and Faxes" dialogue box (Start -> Settings -> Printers and Faxes).

• Double-click "Add Printer" to open the Add Printer Wizard.
• Choose "A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer" in the second step (which type of printer to use) and click next.
• In Step Three (Specify a printer), select "Connect to this printer (or to browse for a printer, selct this optin and click Next):" and type \\print.diamond.ac.uk\name of printer
  e.g. for printer dh.g.51.col.1. type \\print.diamond.ac.uk\dh.g.51.col.1).
• Click next. Windows should now install the printer driver. See Below.

Please note at present, we do not support printing from Windows 10 via the Visitor Network as we do not have the necessary drivers installed.

On Diamond Linux computer, all printers should be automatically available.

However, in case they are not, or you want to connect a non-Diamond computer (e.g. own Linux Laptop from the Visitor network), there are different ways of connecting to the print server.

1. For all users on that computer - requires root access.

You need to have a local cups server running on the computer. If it is version 1.5 or earlier, simply - as root - add the following line to /etc/cups/cupsd.conf:

Then restart CUPS (service cups restart). The printers should appear (try lpstat -p).

If you have a later version of cups (1.6 or later), and are running cups-browsed, you will instead need to add these lines to your /etc/cups/cups-browsed.conf:

Restart cups-browsed (service cups-browsed restart)  and try lpstat -p

2. per user - does not require root access.

For cups v1.7 and lower, add a ~/.cups directory to your home directory and create a file in there called client.conf ( ~/.cups/client.conf ) containing the following:

That user should now see all printers when doing lpstat -p. Note that this is not system-wide and each user will have to do that for him/herself.

A default printer can be set with the command

(e.g. lpoptions -p dh.g.51.bw.1 to set the default printer to the black and white printer in the ground floor print room in Diamond House).

Note that this is user specific unless the command is called by root.

Connect to print.diamond.ac.uk:631 from any web browser for access to a list of printers and print jobs (can also be cancelled or restarted). The CUPS user manual (with information on command line print tools and options) can also be found there.

Currently Macs are not able to see the advertised list of printers but can be manually configured to send the output to the required queue on the print server.

Quick Settings:

• IPP protocol
• Address: print.diamond.ac.uk:631
• Queue: printers/<name>

Ignore warnings about unable to verify printer and leave type as generic postscript (works well unless you want the secure print options that require the specific driver).
